Penicillin/Streptomycin Antibiotic Mix (100X) contains 10,000 units/mL penicillin and
10,000 μg/mL streptomycin and is widely used to prevent bacterial contamination in cell
culture through complementary activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative
bacteria. Penicillin disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis, while streptomycin binds the
30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis. Because many cell lines are not
maintained under fully aseptic conditions from source to routine culture, this antibiotic
mixture is commonly added to help minimize contamination during cell culture maintenance.
