Penicillin/Streptomycin/Neomycin Antibiotic Mix Solution (100X) contains 5,000 units/mL
penicillin-G, 5000 μg/mL streptomycin, and 10,000 μg/mL neomycin. It is formulated to
help prevent common sources of contamination in mammalian cell culture, including
bacterial contamination, mold and yeast contamination, and to some extent
mycoplasma contamination. Penicillin and streptomycin provide broad activity against
gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, while neomycin helps extend the spectrum of
protection and is commonly used for controlling mycoplasma contamination in routine
cell culture. Because most cell lines, unless they are derived from a fully aseptic source
and maintained under strictly sterile conditions, remain vulnerable to different types of
contamination, the use of an antibiotic mixture is often important for maintaining cleaner
and healthier cultures during routine handling and expansion.
