MEM Alpha Modification with Nucleosides in Hanks’ Buffer
(MEM-α-N-HBSS Essential)
MEM Alpha Modification with Nucleosides in Hanks’ Buffer (MEM-α-N-HBSS) , enriched with higher levels of amino acids, making it well-suited for the cultivation of mammalian cells. GMP Bioscience produces MEM formulations with either Hank’s salts—designed for CO₂ incubator use—or Hanks’ salts for use in environments without CO₂ control.
GMP Bioscience MEM in Hanks’ Buffer Includes:
Hanks’ buffer components:
– Potassium chloride
– Potassium phosphate (monobasic)
– Sodium bicarbonate
– Sodium chloride
– Sodium phosphate (dibasic)
Additional constituents:
– Low glucose concentration (1.00 g/L)
– Sodium bicarbonate (0.35 g/L)*
– 2 mM L-glutamine (292 mg/L)
*Note: If CO₂ levels exceed 5%, a higher concentration of sodium bicarbonate is recommended.
Applications
This medium is widely utilized for culturing a range of cell types grown either in suspension or as monolayers, including HeLa, BHK-21, 293, HEP-2, HT-1080, MCF-7, fibroblasts, and primary rat astrocytes. MEM does not include proteins, lipids, or growth factors; thus, supplementation—typically with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS)—is necessary.
